LIPP: First Performance
For my first performance, I had big ideas about achieving a glitchy datamoshing party machine, but after running up against both time constraints and lots of issues with figuring out a matrix controller, I settled on making something a bit more peaceful. Using three of the videos I shot for the first assignment, and building on my work from last week to create a preset controller for my matrix controller and add more sliders and switches to control fades and chromakey tolerance, I wanted to create a meditative experience, vaguely about a white bird (possibly a white pigeon) I saw on the street. It also might just be about texture. I’m using Soft Meadow by Green House as my background music.
I discovered that what (I think) was tripping me up with video playback before was that I thought gates behaved like switches. Once I figured out that they reallllly don’t, changing all my gates to switches solved a lot of my problems. I also compressed the videos I’m using, which hopefully helps a bit too.
I’ve really enjoyed feeding multiple videos into themselves, and by doing so with the building video and the bird video I was able to create an almost ocean-like texture which I enjoy watching the bird meander through glitchily.
One thing that tripped me up for a while, and is still in my Max patch, was a misunderstanding of how metronomes worked. I created an adjustable metronome, thinking it would adjust play speed of my videos, but that didn’t work out the way I planned. I’m still trying to figure out a better way to adjust framerate.
One practice is below. As you can see, my videos are still freezing and forcing me to reset at certain points, which I hope to figure out before tomorrow, but worst case scenario at least they’re working!
