For my doo-dad, I made a multi-tiered piece with a drill hole. I’d still like to add some more parts, but this is the final product:

Turning in action.

While turning, I ran into a few problems: after initial facing and rounding one side, the tiered side caused some difficulties for me. First, I think I drove the blade in too far on my first round — it nearly knocked the aluminum tube off of the chuck, and left some giant scar marks.

Pictured: massive scars.

I faced and turned these down, but ran into a similar problem later on (presumably caused by digging too deep) where my tube got thrown off center. This left tooth marks on the shaft.

Blurry tooth marks.

I turned and faced these further to remove the marks, and I had my final product, but it was a little sloppier than I would have liked, despite sanding and using the sponge thingy. I’m hoping that improvement will come with time and technique.
